Trešnjica springs on the southwest line of Povlen at a height of 1185m. It flows into the Drina near Gornja Trešnjica at a height of 180m. It is 23 km long. The area of the basin is 76 km2. Trešnjica River Canyon is a special nature reserve in Serbia, located in the municipality of Ljubovija. In one part of its course, which is several kilometers long, this river creates a gorge that has unreal features and which, due to its beauty, attracts many adventurers and nature lovers in this area.
In the middle course, the river flows through a picturesque canyon nearly 6 km long, which is cut into an 800-1000 m high surface, built of limestone and dilomite. The attractiveness of this area is completed by preserved watercourses, the remains of two medieval fortifications and ethnic objects in the center of the village.
Rich in natural beauty and rarities, the settlement of Gornja Trešnjica is also the founder of education in this area with its elementary school from 1836.
The path around Trešnjica has been used for decades by children from Gornji Košalje to go to school every day. In honor of them, who crossed this 7-kilometer long route twice a day, the name remained for the future generation - Đačka staza.
The Trešnjica River is a fast mountain river of cold water. Fish include bream, trout, grayling, chub, carp and barbel.
What is specific about the Trešnjica River is that every spring it comes out of the Drina for the natural spawning of
young fish, the "queen" of the Drina.
A full system rainbow trout pond was built on the river. The application of modern technology, which is based on injecting technical oxygen into the water, is unique in Serbia. The Trešnjica River is inhabited by 16 species of reptiles and amphibians, which indicates its diversity.
The river itself creates the canyon of the river Trešnjica, which has been placed under the protection of the state in order to preserve one of the last habitats and populations of the natural rarity of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus Habl.) and the habitats of other rare and endangered animal species that inhabit the picturesque gorges of Trešnjica and Tribuća, such as the gray falcon , buljina.
The griffon vulture is an endangered species that is threatened with extinction and environmentalists are doing everything to save them from disappearing. We currently have 32 pairs of griffon vultures in the canyon. The female lays only one egg per year, and for this reason it is extremely difficult to protect them and keep them from disappearing.
It is a special privilege to stand here, in the company of marvelous flying creatures on the rocky cliffs of the Trešnjica canyon.
Gornja Trešnjica is the entry point to a hidden world - the miniature and attractive gorges of Trešnjica and Tribuća.
Tribuća is the richest tributary of Trešnjica, it is 7 km long and rises below Bobija. In its lower course, it separates the Boškovac plateau from the upper Kosljan surface, creating an
almost impassable gorge attractive to the mountaineers.
The surroundings are rich in medicinal plants and fruits, so this ecologically clean zone should be used for healthy stay and rest.
The sound of mountain water creates a unique soundscape, especially in spring.
